# Turn Bible Study Handouts Into an Online Library

[One Thing to Try This Week](https://mooneyprojects.com/blog/tag/one-thing-to-try-this-week)

Every week, someone in your community works hard on a Bible study lesson. Quite likely the pastor or a lead teacher pour over scripture, their notes and historical information to create tools that will be relevant to disciple the members of the church. This good content gets printed, passed around on Wednesday night, and then... it lives in a few tote bags and the bottom of a desk drawer. Anyone who missed that week missed the lesson and the church missed an opportunity to share more widely.

This week I helped a small church fix that, and the tool we used was already sitting in their website platform in an underused area. Chances are, it's sitting in yours too.

## The fix: use your sermon section as a library

Most church website platforms (Tithe.ly, Subsplash, Church Center, Nucleus, WordPress with a sermon plugin, and others) come with a **sermon or media section**. It's built to highlight audio and video, but it works beautifully for PDFs and interactive teaching aides too.

Here's the setup:

- **Create a series** for your study, like "Wednesday Bible Study."
- **Add each lesson as its own entry** with the title, date, teacher, scripture, and the handout attached as a PDF. If there is a video that gets created or shared, it all likely has a place where it fits.
- **Give it a picture.** A simple image per lesson makes the page feel alive instead of like a file cabinet.

That's it. Now every lesson has its own link you can drop into your newsletter, a text message, or your church app, and the archive grows on its own every week boosting your website's reach.

*A Bible study library built in the church's existing sermon section. Each lesson gets a date, scripture, and its own page.*

## Three things that tripped us up (so they don't trip you)

**1. Give your library its own home.** Our first try (using Tithe.ly) defaulting to dropping Bible study inside the main sermon list, mixed in with Sunday sermons. It worked, but the lessons would become easy to miss as more content is added, and the series page didn't display the way we expected. Many platforms let you create a **separate media channel or category**. Giving Bible study its own page made it cleaner and easier to share. After making a change, open the page in a private browser window to see what visitors actually see.

**2. Watch for "No media available."** Because our lessons had a PDF but no audio or video, each page showed a "No media available" placeholder. It's harmless, but it looks unfinished. Check your platform's page templates and display settings. Many let you switch layouts or hide that block.

**3. You don't have to call it "Sermons."** The section was labeled "Sermons," which doesn't quite fit a teaching library. Many platforms let you rename these labels in settings, so "Sermons" can become "Lessons," "Resources," or "Library."

## Two cautions before you upload

- **Assume it's public.** Files uploaded to church websites are usually public and can show up in Google. Don't post anything with personal information.
- **Only post what you own.** If a lesson comes from published curriculum, check the license first. Most purchased curriculum can be copied for your group, but not posted freely online. Handouts your pastor or teachers wrote themselves are fair game. Don't forget to use your own or royalty free images as well. Copyright infringement penalties are steap.

## Try it this week

1. Find your website's sermon or media section and create a series or channel for your bible study.
2. Upload your most recent handouts as entries, with dates that correspond with the presentation date.
3. Check the page in a private window, then share the link in your next announcement or post it at the top of the study hour.

Small step, big difference: the lesson doesn't end when Wednesday night does.
