# Canva Can Do More for Advent Than You Think

by [Lynn](https://mooneyprojects.com/blog/author/lynn) on November 3, 2026

Advent begins **Sunday, November 29**, which means it's about to sneak up on all of us again.

As we mentioned last week, Canva is the rising star in church office tools. Most church offices know that Canva is good for flyers and social posts. But during Advent, the list of things that need to look nice gets long fast, and a lot of it isn't stuff we think of as "design" at all. A thumbnail for Sunday's livestream. A craft page for the kids. Candle-lighting cards for the families who read on Sunday morning.

Canva can help with almost all of it, and most of it can carry a consistent vibe so that the set of materials feels consistent.

## Start by searching "Advent 2026"

Open Canva, go to **Templates**, and search for **Advent 2026**. You'll find a surprising range: traditional purples and candlelight, simple modern designs, watercolor, kid-friendly, right calendar dates and plenty in between. Searching just **Advent** turns up even more.

Don't try to look at everything. Pick the one or two styles that feel like your church, and let that choice carry you through the season.

## Make the Advent calendar your own

This is the part I want to say out loud: **a template is a starting point, not a finished product.**

Canva's Advent calendar templates look lovely as they are, but they get really useful when you fill them with your church's seasonal details. Once you've picked one, plug in:

- Your **sermon series** title and each Sunday's theme
- **Service times** and special dates, like your Christmas program, caroling, or Christmas Eve service
- A **daily Scripture reading** or short prayer for families to follow at home
- Your **ministry focus** for the season or year, like a food drive, a mission offering, or a "bring a neighbor" invitation
- Small **daily actions**, like "call someone who's homebound" or "write a thank-you note to a teacher"

Now it isn't just a pretty calendar. It's your church's Advent, with everything a family needs to walk through it together. Print it for the welcome table, send it home with the kids, and share it as a post or in your email.

## Advent bulletins, every Sunday

For most churches, the bulletin is the one thing every person holds every Sunday. It's also the piece that gets the least design love, because it has to be done every single week.

Search Canva for **Advent bulletin** or **church bulletin** and pick a cover in your season's style. Then set it up once and reuse it all season:

- **Check the size first.** Before you design anything, make sure the page size matches how your church prints, like a letter-size sheet folded in half or a legal-size sheet folded in half. Fixing the size later is a headache.
- **Build the first Sunday** with your cover, order of worship, and announcements.
- **Duplicate it for each week.** Canva lets you keep several pages in one design, so all four Sundays can live side by side. Each week, change the week's name, the candle, the hymns, and the announcements. The look stays the same.
- **Don't forget Christmas Eve.** Make that one a little special, since it's often the bulletin visitors take home.

When the bulletin matches the slides, the livestream, and the calendar on the refrigerator, Advent starts to feel like one season instead of a pile of separate pieces.

## Livestream thumbnails

If your church streams on YouTube or Facebook, the thumbnail is the first thing people see before they click. It's also the thing most of us forget until Sunday morning.

Search Canva for **YouTube thumbnail** and you'll get designs already sized for the job. Make one for the First Sunday of Advent in your season's style, then copy it for each week and change just the words: the week's name, the candle, the sermon title. Four Sundays, one sitting, and every week matches.

Keep the words big and few. Most people will see that thumbnail on a phone, about the size of a postage stamp.

## Craft pages for children's ministry

This is one that surprises many people. Canva isn't just for screens. It's great for printables, including the pages your children's ministry needs every Advent.

Search for things like **Advent coloring page**, **Advent wreath craft**, or **Christmas coloring page**, and look for ideas like:

- **Coloring pages** for each week of Advent
- **Cut-out candles and wreaths** kids can color, cut, and glue together over four Sundays
- **Paper chain countdowns**, with a short verse or prayer on each link
- **Nativity cut-outs** for a take-home craft

Before you print, set the page size to **US Letter** so nothing gets cut off. For anything kids will cut and glue, cardstock holds up much better than copy paper.

## A few more Advent needs Canva can handle

- **Candle-lighting cards.** Give each family who lights the Advent candle a simple card with their reading and prayer, so nobody is squinting at a phone at the front of the sanctuary.
- **Bulletin inserts** for special offerings or the Christmas program.
- **Welcome and countdown slides** for your screens before service.
- **A Christmas service times graphic** you can post, email, print, and put on the website. Make it once, use it everywhere.
- **Invitation cards** your members can hand to a neighbor or coworker. A personal invitation still beats any ad.
- **Volunteer sign-up flyers** for decorating the sanctuary, the Christmas program, or the food drive.
- **Gift tags** for an angel tree or a giving project.

## Make it all match

Pick **one** template style and use it for everything. When the calendar, the thumbnails, the bulletin, and the slides all match, the season feels intentional, even if you made it all in one afternoon.

If you have Canva Pro, the **Resize** tool can turn one design into other sizes, so your bulletin cover can become a slide or a social post without starting over. If you're on the free plan, copying a design and adjusting it works fine too. It just takes a few more minutes.

Many churches can also apply for **Canva for Nonprofits**, which gives eligible organizations Canva's premium features for free. It's worth checking whether your church qualifies.

## A quick word about images

Canva's templates and the images inside them come with permission to use them in your designs, which makes them a safer choice than grabbing a picture from a Google search. If you're not sure why that matters, I wrote about it in [That Google Image Isn't Free](https://mooneyprojects.com/blog/that-google-image-isnt-free).

## What this is really for

Advent is supposed to be a season of waiting and preparing. For church offices, it often turns into a season of rushing and overwhelm.

Making your Advent pieces now, while November is still a little quieter, gives some of that time back. When the first Sunday comes, the thumbnails are ready, the craft pages are printed, and the calendar is already on the refrigerator of every family who took one home.

Then you get to enjoy the season too.
